Cambodia relaxes sports ban after Covid-19 situation eases

PHNOM PENH (Xinhua: Cambodia on Tuesday (May 26)decided to relax its sports ban after the situation of Covid-19 in the kingdom has eased.

Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, said sports activities are now allowed to resume, but fans are not allowed on courtside, and he advised sports officials and athletes to strictly follow health advice to stem the virus spread.

"League tournaments must be behind closed doors, and fans are not allowed," he said in a statement.

"Athletes and officials must not be more than 100 in each league competition."

Sports facilities and equipment must be sanitised before training sessions or contests, he said, adding that athletes must not shake hands or hug each other after they score a goal.

Cambodia banned sports activities in mid-March when the South-east Asian nation saw a spike in Covid-19 cases.

Currently, the situation of COVID-19 in the country has eased, as only two out of the kingdom's 124 patients remain hospitalised. - Xinhua
