PETALING JAYA: PKR and DAP are steadfast in nominating only Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for the Selangor mentri besar post despite the Sultan of Selangor’s request for Pakatan Rakyat component parties to submit more than two names each for consideration.
In a joint statement signed by PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua yesterday, the two parties maintained their earlier decision to recommend only the PKR president for the Sultan’s consideration.
The component parties said the decision to only nominate one candidate was in line with the convention practised by Pakatan when it again won in Selangor in 2013 and nominated only one name – Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim – and was accepted by the Ruler.
The statement said the move to nominate only Dr Wan Azizah was in line with the convention, especially since the Kajang assemblyman had a majority support of at least 30 state representatives, including herself.
“In 2013, the Sultan had also requested for Pakatan Rakyat component parties to nominate more than one name for the appointment of the mentri besar.
“That request was conveyed to PKR, PAS and DAP through a letter dated May 7, 2013, and it reflected the convention practised by the Sultan.
“Subsequent to that request, Pakatan submitted a single name – Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim – for the Sultan’s consideration. This nomination was agreed and accepted by His Highness,” it said.
Khalid said yesterday he had submitted his resignation letter but Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had deferred acceptance of it until a suitable replacement could be named.
