LOS ANGELES: Google has released Android 17, the latest version of its mobile operating system, bringing a range of new features including freely floating app windows, screen recording with a selfie-video overlay and a gaming mode for foldable devices.
The update began rolling out first to Pixel devices that still receive Android updates earlier this month. Users can check under Settings > System > Software updates > System update to see whether the update is already available, or simply wait until their smartphone notifies them.
Owners of other Android smartphones or tablets will need to wait until their manufacturer has adapted Android 17 for their specific devices. Those updates are expected later in the year.
Here is what Android 17 contains in detail:
Multitasking with floating windows
Up to five apps can be displayed as smaller, floating windows – known as Bubbles – freely positioned over the main screen, making it easy to look something up quickly or handle several things at once. The feature is designed to make multitasking easier.
To open a floating window, users simply press and hold the app icon. On devices with a large display, the windows dock in a dedicated bar along the bottom edge of the screen.
Selfie-video overlay on recordings without an extra app
Screen recordings with a selfie-video overlay are now possible directly from the operating system, without the need to install additional apps. The feature – popular for reaction videos on social media networks – can now be accessed natively.
The recording can be started from the quick settings menu by selecting the screen recording function for the full screen, choosing "Show selfie camera" and then starting the recording.
Better privacy for location and contacts
Apps can now be granted location permission on a temporary basis, with users able to specify how long the permission should last. It is also now possible to share only selected contacts with an app, rather than granting access to the entire address book.
More security for lost or stolen devices
The "Mark as lost" function in the "Find My Device" app has been overhauled. A lost or missing smartphone can now be locked remotely using biometric data – either a fingerprint or facial recognition. This means that a thief who knows the PIN code would be unable to access the smartphone or disable location tracking.
New gaming mode on foldable devices
A gaming mode for foldable devices is entirely new, featuring an optimised 50-50 layout with the game view on top and a dynamic gamepad below. When an external controller is connected, its button mapping can now be reassigned within Android. The gaming mode is already included in the Android 17 update, but is not expected to be activated until the coming months.
Miscellaneous features from parental controls to RAM limits
A number of additional new functions have also been added, including:
- A new setting that allows app names on the home screen to be hidden.
- An extension of parental controls to all Android devices.
- A dedicated volume control for the assistant.
- More customisation options for dark mode.
A limit on the amount of working memory (RAM) that apps are permitted to use to prevent any single app from consuming too much. This is intended to improve overall device performance and battery life. – dpa
