PETALING JAYA: The Immigration Department of Malaysia has reminded the public not to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to generate or edit passport photos.

In a recent Facebook post, the Immigration Department stressed that AI-generated photos or the submission of false information is a serious offence.

"Applicants should ensure that the photo submitted is original, clear and in compliance with the specifications stipulated," the Immigration Department of Malaysia added.

Requirements include clear photos of the face taken against a white background with even lighting.

Any false photos or information submitted may result in the application being rejected, and the applicant may be subject to action under the Passport Act 1966 (Act 150).

"Use original photos. Avoid AI manipulation," it added in the post.

On May 19, The Star reported that Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said its officers have the expertise to tell whether photos are AI-generated when they are submitted through online applications.
