Thanks to iPhone, RCS is a hit in the US

Google has announced that the number of RCS messages sent every day in the United States has passed the one billion mark. This boom in popularity is essentially due to the mass adoption of RCS on iPhone over the last few months.

Rich Communication Services (RCS), considered to be the successor to SMS, is enjoying rapid growth and is becoming the new standard for messaging on Android and iOS. Today, in the United States alone, more than a billion RCS messages are sent every day.

This transition to richer, more interactive mobile messaging has been boosted by Apple's late adoption of the standard. Since the iOS 18 update in fall 2024, it has been possible to benefit from RCS on iPhone, provided, of course, that your telephone operator allows it.

RCS is an enhanced messaging protocol. Unlike SMS, which is limited in length, RCS lets you send unlimited messages, as well as numerous high-quality multimedia files, to one or more contacts. The creation of groups offers greater user-friendliness, while acknowledgements of receipt and typing indicators enable live exchanges. This technology is integrated directly into the phone's native messaging application. To use it, simply activate this option in your phone's settings.

Today, RCS has not yet replaced SMS, but it represents a major evolution towards richer mobile communication that is above all adapted to individual needs. But while SMS is threatened by RCS, it has also been overshadowed for years by instant messaging applications, starting with WhatsApp, in terms of the volume of data exchanged. – AFP Relaxnews
