Copilot+ PCs: Is it worth paying the premium for an AI laptop?

BERLIN: Only Windows computers with an additional AI processor are allowed to bear the label "Copilot+ PC", Microsoft's guarantee that the computer has a so-called NPU (Neural Processing Unit).

This isn't just any NPU, but one that can perform more than 40 trillion computing operations per second, performance that is said to guarantee that current and future AI features can be used in Windows 11.

Sounds impressive, but is it all just more AI hype? For the time being, the powerful AI processors are not yet really relevant for buyers, specialists believe, simply because there is still a lack of software that could exploit the AI power.

Currently, chip models from the processor families Ryzen AI (Pro) 300 from AMD, Core Ultra 200V from Intel and Snapdragon X from Qualcomm meet Microsoft's requirement.

But Microsoft is only gradually rolling out its AI features in Windows updates, so the Copilot+ label is more of a promise of potentially useful features to come.

Entry-level notebooks with Copilot Plus cost around €1,000/US$1,000/RM4,501, but you can easily spend three times as much. Older non-AI processors will remain the cheaper choice for the time being, and it's too early to wait for AI chip prices to drop. – dpa/Tribune News Service
