SAN JOSE: Perhaps you've fallen down a political rabbit hole that you want to climb out of. Or you just found yourself constantly uninterested by the posts you see.
Instagram's algorithm is designed to keep you coming back for more and more, but sometimes it can take you in the wrong direction.
The social media platform's latest feature lets you wipe the slate clean and reset the algorithm that feeds you content recommendations. The feature, rolling out globally, will then become available under a user’s content preferences under the option “Reset suggested content”.
This reset will change the content recommendations that users see in the Explore, Reels, and Feed sections of the app. However, resetting won’t change the advertising displayed to you or affect the accounts you follow.
After resetting, the algorithm should relearn which content the user likes, for example based on what is shared. It can also be trained when you use the three-dot menu on posts on the Explore section to select "Interested" or "Not interested.”
The new feature is aimed particularly at young people, Instagram says, and is intended to contribute to safe and age-appropriate content. For the past year Instagram has offered an option of not displaying the feed based on the algorithm at all, but simply chronologically.
In mid-September 2024, the social network also gave parents of young people more control over their use of the app. Since then, young people have automatically been sorted into "Teen Accounts" that are subject to certain restrictions regarding content, usage times, and contact options. – dpa
