PETALING JAYA: The long-awaited Tesla Model Y SUV has finally launched in Malaysia, marking the first time that one of the company’s electric vehicles (EVs) have been made officially available in the country.

Online orders for three variants of the Model Y have been open since last week, but the actual launch event happened yesterday with a showcase at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

The rear-wheel-drive standard range Model Y starts at RM199,000, has an estimated maximum range of 430km, a top speed of 217kph and can accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 6.9 seconds.

There's also the option for a long-range all-wheel-drive Model Y starting at RM246,000, which extends the range to 533km with faster acceleration: 0 to 100kph in five seconds.

Those looking for more power can opt for the all-wheel drive Performance Model Y starting at RM288,000, which gets a bump in top speed to 250kph and even higher acceleration at just 3.7 seconds to go from 0 to 100kph, though with the caveat of a lower estimated maximum range at 514km.

Extra bells and whistles like Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving will add quite a bit to the cost, considering that they are priced at RM16,000 and RM32,000, respectively.

The Tesla showcase at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur will run until Oct 31, where those interested in the Model Y can have a more hands-on experience with the EV.

Tesla is currently taking orders for the Model Y both via its online configurator and at the showcase, with delivery expected to be in early 2024.The rear-wheel-drive standard range Model Y starts at RM199,000, while the all-wheel drive long range and Performance are priced higher at RM246,000 and RM288,000, respectively. — TeslaThe rear-wheel-drive standard range Model Y starts at RM199,000, while the all-wheel drive long range and Performance are priced higher at RM246,000 and RM288,000, respectively. — Tesla
