To fight fraud, TeamViewer now requires an account for remote access

BERLIN: The IT help tool TeamViewer has introduced a new rule requiring anyone to log into an account before the can remotely access software on another person's computer.

Previously, anyone pretending to be an IT employee from your own workplace or a tech company like Microsoft or Google, could in theory request access to your computer for nefarious purposes.

Would-be IT helpers must now be registered users and log in with a TeamViewer account, the German company says, as part of an update for “misuse-prevention and security”.

TeamViewer is responding to numerous attempts by cybercriminals to gain access to computers via remote maintenance. These criminals typically pretend to be the support staff of a company such as Microsoft on the phone and then try to gain access to computers via remote maintenance software.

For those seeking help on their computers, the company says the new mandatory account approach should lead to “increased transparency on incoming connections”.

That means that when a request comes in that someone is trying to access your computer, you will in future see the name and location of the person who wants to see your screen.

The company says it has also updated the design of its software, now officially called TeamViewer Remote, for optimised use. Another new feature is the possibility for helpers to use TeamViewer via browser, which means they do not have to start or install a programme.

TeamViewer, which is free for private use, offers remote access not only for PCs and laptops, but can also be used on smartphones and tablets, for which TeamViewer provides corresponding apps for download. – dpa
