Celcom has announced that starting today (Nov 1), users with 5G-enabled devices on selected postpaid and prepaid plans will be able to access 5G network services within the coverage area.

The telco is waiving the 5G access fee for customers to experience the 5G services as per their Internet quota on existing plans until Dec 31.

Eligible customers include those on Celcom Mega Lightning plan 80, 98, 128, 158, and 188, as well as Xpax Postpaid 40 and 60. Prepaid customers on Xpax 35 and 45 are also eligible.

According to an FAQ, customers will receive an SMS notification stating that they can start using 5G services.

“Once you have received this SMS, you can enjoy these services automatically with a 5G device within the 5G coverage area and the 5G icon will appear on your phone,” the company said in the FAQ.

Customers who did not receive the SMS can request to access 5G via Celcom’s customer service at 1111, or walk into any of its blue cube outlets. They have to meet three requirements, namely that they are subscribed to an eligible Celcom 5G plan, using a 5G-compatible device, and utilising an USIM card or on eSIM.

The company claimed that 5G customers will experience Internet connection about 10 to 20 times faster than 4G, with a minimum speed of 100MBps.

The Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) website has more information on 5G coverage area and list of currently supported 5G devices.

A number of telcos have announced the arrival of its 5G services to customers including Unifi Mobile with plans starting from RM35/monthly and U Mobile said customers can start accessing 5G connectivity on Nov 3.

Meanwhile Maxis said that its company's board is "still assessing the governance requirements for the 5G Access Agreement" with DNB in a statement released on yesterday (Oct 31). The company added that it is committed to bring the matter to a close as soon as possible.

Digi said it has signed the access agreement with DNB and details about the company's 5G offerings will be shared in due course.
