In September 2019, Apple sent fans into a frenzy when announcing fast charging at 18W for its new iPhones. Apple's top-of-the-range iPhone 11 Pro Max was able to cut its 0-100% charging time to roughly two hours, give or take, tests showed.
Now, putting Apple to shame, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo says its latest 125W charger can charge a 4,000 mAh battery (roughly the capacity of many new smartphones) to 41% in just five minutes.
Give it a full 20 minutes and it will charge to 100% at the full charging speed, according to Oppo's announcement on July 15.
However, this rate of charging will only work on Oppo phones using its VOOC charging standard, which the maker says is the industry's most advanced.
Faster chargers generally mean larger wall chargers, which is why Oppo has also developed a slim 110W charger, alongside the plus-sized 125W model. The smartphone brand also announced a 65W wireless charger that also works with older Oppo phones.
The latest announcement will likely cement the company's battery tech lead in the smartphone world.
After years of making bestselling smartphones in China, Oppo appears poised to become a household tech brand in other countries and has made a name for itself with budget and mid-range phones like the Reno series. – dpa
