Sony Interactive Entertainment will be charging 6% sales and services tax (SST) on games sold on the Malaysian PlayStation Store starting January next year.
The tax will kick in from 8am, Jan 1, for all purchasable items and subscription services except for its PlayStation Plus which will see no price hike.
PlayStation Plus is a subscription service that grants players access to online multiplayer, and also offers free games and discounts every month.
“There may be some cases where you will see different prices between product detail pages and check out pages. The amount displayed on check out pages will be charged,” it posted on its blog.
There will be no SST charges when you top up your e-wallet
However, the post also says that “the price updates will be implemented on items sold on the PlayStation Store from Jan 4 to 6”.
We have reached out to Sony Malaysia for clarification on this, and why it's SST instead of digital tax.
