Augmented reality (AR) wizarding game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is now available in Malaysia but be warned that it consumes a lot of data.

Launched last Friday in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, the game has since been rolled out in 25 other countries, including Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei.

Website Wizards Unite Hub reports that the game uses a large amount of data to load game assets, ranging from 30KB (kilobytes) to 4MB (megabytes) each.

It estimates the total download, which will be cached on the phone, to be about 1.37GB (gigabytes).

The site recommends users to preload game resources while on a WiFi connection by clicking through the Registry menu and forcing the game to load models of creatures and objects.

In Wizards Unite, players take on the role of a recruit with the Statute of Secrecy Task Force to solve various mysteries, including the truth behind the Calamity – the developer claims it will be "a deep, multi-year narrative arc".

The game was co-developed by Niantic and Warner Bros Games San Francisco's Portkey Games, the game publisher dedicated to adapting JK Rowling's works.

Like Niantic's previous games Pokemon Go and Ingress, AR will be used to overlay Inns, Greenhouses, Fortresses and Magical Traces on real-world landmarks and locations.

Players will be able to discover mysterious artifacts, cast spells, and encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters.

The game has received generally positive reviews, with a 4.2/5 rating on Google Play and 4.4/5 on Apple App Store.
