Screen Cleaner will use smudge detection API and geometric dirt models to identify imperfections
Google has added a new feature to its Files app which not only cleans the screen but also stain proofs it.
Though Files was originally designed to keep a device’s memory clutter-free by deleting unnecessary files, the new feature – Screen Cleaner – will also keep the outside of the phone clean.
Screen Cleaner will use smudge detection API and geometric dirt models to identify imperfections, and a haptic micro-movement generator to dislodge dirt and smudges, according to the YouTube video.
It adds that once the phone is clean, internal vibrations and haptic controls will create micro-vibrations to form a long-lasting nonstick shield around the phone.
“So with just a few taps, your screen is like new, with a fresh pineapple scent,” concludes the cheery voice on the video.
Clicking the Screen Cleaner service also prompts File’s blob character to wipe the smartphone screen clean in a cute animation.
Commenters on YouTube are playing along, some praising the effectiveness of the app while one even asked for alternatives to the pineapple scent due to an alleged allergy.
Another April Fools’ feature is Snake on Google Maps, that pays homage to the old Nokia favourite, allowing users to guide a snake in the form of public transportation in various locations. You score points when you pick up people and net extra if you collect food or pass a landmark.
Google Maps product manager Omar Abdelaziz says capitals featured in the game include Cairo, London, San Francisco, São Paulo, Sydney and Tokyo.
“Once you’ve selected a city, start picking up as many passengers as you can as your train travels around the world – stopping everywhere from Big Ben, the Great Sphinx of Giza to the Eiffel Tower. But make sure you don’t run off the map (or into yourself)!” he says.
To play the game, open the Google Maps app, tap on the menu icon on the top left corner, then select “Play Snake”.
The game will be available worldwide for Android and iOS for about a week.
After that you will still be able to access it from this microsite or you can just play it from there now.
