The Philippine SEA Games Organising Committee (PHISGOC) and its eSports partner, gaming hardware company Razer, have announced the game titles that will be contested at the eSports medal event in the 2019 SEA Games.
The titles are Dota 2 and Starcraft II for the PC platform, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Arena Of Valor for the mobile gaming platform and arcade game Tekken 7 for the console platform.
A sixth and final game for the console platform will be announced later. Overall, six gold medals will be up for grabs at the eSports event in the 2019 Sea Games.
Razer confirmed the announcement in a tweet posted on Dec 20.
In statement posted on Fox Sports Asia, PHISGOC executive director Ramon Suzara shared that they are thrilled to be partnering with Razer for the 2019 SEA Games.
Razer CEO Ming-Liang Tan believes that the latest announcement is a positive sign for the development and acceptance of eSports.
“The shortlisting of six games in such a short time is evidence that the notion of eSports as a legitimate sporting event is no longer a fad. We look forward to having more partners come on board and join us in defining a new generation of sporting heroes for the youth and millennials,” Tan said.
The 2019 SEA Games happening on Nov 30 to Dec 11 next year marks the first time that eSports will be a medal event in a major sports competition.
This year, it was included as an exhibition event at the Asian Games in Indonesia.
The Malaysian Electronic Sports Association (ESM) secretary-general Rinie Ramli in a recent Bernama report said they are ready to start selecting athletes for the SEA Games in 2019.
“Next year’s SEA Games will be the first time that eSports events will be officially included in the medal tally. So, the selection of athletes will be held from the state level to the national level so that we do not just focus on the Klang Valley,” he said.
