The main function of the mode, also known as developer mode, is to allow a connection between the device and the Android Software Development Kit.

Backup and synchronisation programmes in particular often require the user to activate this mode.

It allows high-level access to the device's most basic functions, which can be dangerous. For example, the screen lock can be easily bypassed via debugging mode, which can be a problem if the device is lost.
