The director of the Creative Multimedia division of MDEC gives his list of five of the best games ever.
Here we list the favourite titles of Hasnul Hadi Samsudin, the director of the Creative Multimedia Division in Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), who is responsible for promoting Malaysian game developers and animators both locally and internationally.
“This is tough! As tough as asking me what my top five films are! I can’t do justice to all the great games out there,” he says.
“So hopefully it doesn’t offend any of my friends in the industry. There are a whole lot more games that I could mention but at the top of my mind these titles represent the different genres I love.”
Dune 2 (PC)
This was one of those games that I spent plenty of hours playing with friends while studying in college.
It was a single-player game so we had to take turns on a shared laptop at the dorm. It was one of the first real-time strategy (RTS) games and it was the precursor to the next Westwood hit – Command And Conquer. Sadly, one of my favourite genres doesn’t seem to get any more love.
One of the first “real 3D” first-person shooters (FPS), it offered a visceral experience that was fun, exciting and violent.
It wasn’t the first FPS I had played but it was the one I spent hours on because of the multiplayer mode.
Who could ever forget doing a hop, skip and rocket jump while keeping an opponent in sight and then finally finishing him or her with a rocket? I sure haven’t!
Street Fighter II (arcade machine)
I think I had spent over a couple of thousand 20sen coins on this arcade fighter. Truly one of the most remembered competitive gaming phenomena, it was the precursor to eSports.
Learning each character, their moves and nuances made us all spend our hard-earned allowance on this great game.
I am sure everyone remembers the clockwise joystick turn to make Ryu unleash his Hadouken (aka fireball).
World Of Warcraft (PC)
Not my first MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game), but it’s the most memorable one.
At the time it was as real as any fantasy world could be – traversing forests to see Stormwind, as well as running through the Ironforge with dwarves and the Badlands with the Orcs.
These adventures are still imprinted in my mind. Although I didn’t continue far because of work, I spent hours levelling up in the land of Azeroth. My old characters are “SamiPendek” and “BomohKerbau” – guess what they are?
Rez (Sega Dreamcast)
This game combined two things very well – 3D graphics and music. It was one of the tiles that melded both art forms and created a world that you could get totally absorbed into for hours.
Every action and shot creates notes and music which ultimately decide the outcome of the game.
It didn’t require high-end graphics like most games today to get your attention – in fact, it only used simple vector graphics that still look good.
