As wearable technology has the potential to reinvent the way we work, industry analysts are forecasting big growth in this area. CCS Insight is predicting that there will up to 100 million “smartphone companions” such as smartwatches by 2017.
To take advantage of this market, enterprise application company IFS Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd is already interfacing its business software solutions with wearable technology.
“IFS believes that it is important to innovate, test and develop emerging technologies that can bring value to users of business applications,” said Sridharan Arumugam, IFS vice president for South East Asia.
“Many of our customers feel it’s important to mobilise business applications so that their employees can access the information they need and make educated decisions when on the field.”
IFS says it has has created a fully working proof-of-concept using a Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch which can receive notifications from its business applications.
“The majority of project planning is done in the office and these changes have to be communicated to on-site personnel immediately,” said Sridharan.
“Wearables offer a faster and more convenient way of accessing information quickly and efficiently.”
As many of IFS’ customers are in the oil and gas industry, wearable technology will also be beneficial for monitoring equipment, as it will be easy to receive and view real-time information.
At this stage, IFS said its solution is only a proof-of-concept and it’s not restricting it to a particular industry. To test its solution, it will be conducting trial runs with its early adopters.
