Open source music streaming service appears on the Web

A new music streaming service seemingly inspired by the original Napster music sharing service has appeared online.

Napster, which began life in 1999, initially offered peer-to-peer file sharing with an emphasis on audio files, but soon ran into legal difficulties. The service was eventually shut down in 2001 and, following a long and drawn-out legal process, the Napster brand and logo were acquired by Roxio and used to launch paid subscription service Napster 2.0, before Napster was eventually acquired from Roxio by Rhapsody.
