Simple ways

to reduce

energy usage

at home

Conserving energy makes daily life more environmentally friendly and most importantly, it decreases household energy bills. Use this guide to find energy conservation solutions that work best for you amid this sweltering heat wave. Start reducing your electricity bill and go green today!

Unplug the plug

Did you know that unplugged electronic devices are still conducting electricity? Leaving the phone charger, microwave, television and other appliances plugged in will continue to draw phantom energy even if they are switched off. Unplugging the appliances may seem like a hassle, but think of how much you can save on monthly electricity bills in the long run.

Keep track of your power usage

A great way to assess your home’s energy efficiency is to simply track when and how you use electricity. Download the myTNB app or access the portal to monitor your energy consumption. Your daily, weekly and monthly energy usage can be tracked there. You can even set an energy budget on the myTNB app and it will send alerts when you are reaching the set budget.

One can learn how to calculate the Imbalance Cost-Pass-Through (ICPT) charges through https://myelectricitybill.my/. The calculation and methodology of ICPT is determined by the Energy Commission and is subject to Government approval on a 6-monthly basis.

Look for the 5-star sticker

Purchase appliances such as refrigerator, air-conditioner, fan and television that are labeled with the 5-star sticker. These 5-star energy appliances, which are designed to use less energy, help protect the environment by meeting the strict energy-efficient guidelines set by the Energy Commission of Malaysia. These 5-Star energy appliances will save you on hefty electricity bills for the long run.

Change the bulbs

Light-emitting diode (LED) lights use 85% less power than other bulbs. LED lighting works with most light fixtures, has a dimming function and is usually brighter than other lighting. Thus, reducing the need for additional floor lamps and accessory lighting which translates to less energy used.

Check the air conditioner

Did you know the air conditioner compressor consumes more power to generate the same compressor cooling impact due to higher ambient temperature amid the heatwave? Hence, do consider getting a new energy efficient air conditioner when problems arise with the old appliance as it would likely massively draw on your energy supply and, consequently, your wallet. Also, one must remember that neglecting the necessary maintenance ensures poor performance and unnecessarily high energy use.

Go solar

As a renewable source of energy, solar power cuts down on power grid energy consumption and helps you save money in the long run. One can consider TNB’s rooftop solar PV packages, which  are available through its wholly owned subsidiary - GSPARX.

Higher consumption = higher bills

Although overall energy consumption dipped by 3% between April to May 2023, analysis has shown an increase in consumption that caused the usage to fall into higher tariff bands, starting from over 600 kWh with the highest increase in  the 1,501 to 2,000 kWh tariff band.

The total  kWh will fall under a higher band with a different rate, depending on the monthly electricity consumption, which is not based on the RM comparison. Also, the high bill increase is not due to ICPT announcements.

National Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has assured that up to 99% of domestic consumers, those who have a monthly electricity consumption rate of 1,500 kWh or below, will not experience any increase.

Electricity consumers in Peninsular Malaysia will enjoy existing and possibly even lower tariff rates for the next six months effective July 1.

However, high-consumption domestic users whose current monthly electricity bill is at least RM708 will see a minimum 25% increase in charges.
