Work-based learning for seamless transition to employment

Jom! Berkerja Sambil Belajar (JBSB) is a CSR collaboration between PKT Logistics Group and Peninsula College, where students will earn supplementary income and gain working experience from job placements in PKT.

THE Graduates Statistics 2020 has recorded a steep increase of 22.5% in the number of unemployed graduates in Malaysia since the pandemic started.

Clearly, having a degree or diploma alone does not guarantee a job.

Rather than leaving the job search to chance, Peninsula College believes that building close ties within industries is key to boosting the employability of its graduates – hence, the campus-in-industry model was born.

The question is, if a doctor can be trained in a hospital environment, why not others in their respective industries?

With this philosophy, Peninsula College specialises in working with industry partners to provide a learning module that is based on real-world scenarios and vocational training.

Gone are the days when students are required to only memorise theories and concepts that are irrelevant to today’s fast-evolving business environment.

Besides that, Peninsula College’s carefully selected lecturers are subject matter experts in their industries – qualified to equip students with the requisite knowledge in communication, critical thinking and academic literacy.

The second half is matching students with opportunities suited to their areas of interest and strengths.

Peninsula College’s close proximity to the logistics hubs is conducive for work-based learning and has been producing highly employable graduates in the last 25 years.
Peninsula College’s close proximity to the logistics hubs is conducive for work-based learning and has been producing highly employable graduates in the last 25 years.

With the vision of bringing its graduates to the doorsteps of future employers, Peninsula College has opened its iconic The Ship campus at the heart of Batu Kawan Industrial Park, which is an emerging investment hub in Penang.

The Ship campus not only stands proudly beside The 12 Waves, Malaysia’s longest single-storey warehouse, but is also surrounded by local and international industry players such as Jabil, InariTechnology and Sandisk.

This allows students to easily gain exposure to subject matter experts and witness industries inaction be it through an internship, part-time job or even the college’s Jom! Berkerja Sambil Belajar (JBSB) programme.

CSR initiative

Owing to their rich working experiences through JBSB, Peninsula College’s graduates were recruited by Japan’s leading cold logistics solutions company Daisei Every24 in Nagoya.

The JBSB programme is a corporate social responsibility initiative by the college’s parent company, PKT Logistics Group. This programme began in 2015 and churned out about 80 alumni per month.

Participating students gain hands-on industry experiences that can help bridge the gap between theory and practice while earning an average monthly income of RM300 to RM500.

Time invested in working between studies also goes into character building as they learn more about time management, communication, discipline and practise taking ownership in their roles.

Students are also given mentoring by the programme principal every month to track their progress and make sure they do not neglect their studies.

Owing to this programme, students have accumulated work experience and grown more confident at the job, making them more employable compared to their peers who join the workforce with no working experience.
