How to prepare for the Omicron wave

AFTER two years of restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the rollout of vaccines heralds the hope of “near normalcy”.

But when the World Health Organisation (WHO) designated Omicron as a variant of concern, the world finds itself riding another wave as the cases rise exponentially. (1)

Although considered to be a less ominous variant, it’s important to understand the key symptoms and how to be prepared.

Key symptoms of Omicron

Omicron has been largely acknowledged as relatively milder with less intense symptoms as compared to the Delta variant, and its symptoms seem to be restricted to the throat and nose largely as compared to the lungs. (2)

What makes it challenging is its similarity to the common cold and flu, considering the symptoms that have been largely observed in the affected population.

According to the ZOE Covid study app in December 2021, the top five symptoms include runny nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing and sore throat – most or all of which resemble cold-like symptoms. (3)

The data collected from this study also shows symptoms usually present themselves within 48 hours of catching the Omicron variant.

The ZOE study indicated that nearly six of 10 patients infected with Omicron reported having sore throat.

It was found that almost 50% of those aged 18-65 years were commonly affected by sore throat as compared to the more elderly or those under 18 (40% or less). Furthermore, a sore throat appears to be a common early symptom of Omicron infection.

How to prepare and tackle the symptoms

If you should experience any of the symptoms, it would be best to isolate yourself from close ones and get yourself tested immediately.

Meanwhile, plenty of fluid intake, particularly warm beverages, can ensure you are well hydrated. Ensure you keep sore throat remedies nearby in case you and your family need to isolate.

Ask your local pharmacist to recommend lozenges, spray or a gargle that is effective in relieving painful inflamed throats.

Pain relief medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may also be required. Thermometer and a pulse oximeter are also other vital essentials. Use the pulse oximeter to check your oxygen level (95 or above) at least twice a day.

If your sore throat progresses to more intense pain or lasts for four to five days, do not hesitate to consult your pharmacist or doctor.

If you are suffering from any chronic condition such as diabetes, cardiac, respiratory or renal ailments or have risk factors such as obesity, contact your doctor immediately.

How to protect yourself from infection

If someone at home is already infected with Omicron, designate areas for common usage and keep sanitisers handy to disinfect in a timely manner.

Wearing a mask in public places, frequent handwashing, use of hand sanitiser, gloves, social distancing, proper ventilation are some of the best ways to protect oneself from catching Omicron.

Boosting one’s immunity, regular sleep and healthy food habits would help to guard against any infection.

Needless to say, do get vaccinated or your booster as soon as recommended, if you haven’t done so already.

Keep yourself and others safe by preparing an Omicron wellness kit to help you manage your symptoms at home:

> Face masks

> Hand sanitiser

> Gloves

> Sore throat lozenges

> Cough medicine

> Thermometer

> Pain relief medicine

> Oximeter

If at any time you have any concerns about your symptoms, it is advisable to speak to your doctor or pharmacist. As with all medicines, use them in accordance with the label and directions for use.
