BEING a great employer is no mean feat indeed, but Sunway has proven itself by beating the competition to emerge as not only the second most sustainable employer in Malaysia under the Sustainable Employer Research Centre’s Sustainable Employer Index (SEI), but also the biggest winner with the most recognitions for the Graduates’ Choice Awards (GCA) 2021/2022.

The new generation of talents seek companies that look beyond profit to make an impact in the communities around them, with the common goal of achieving a sustainable future, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), alongside environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations.

And with these recent wins that reaffirm Sunway’s standing as a sought-after employer, the most important thing to note is that both these awards reflect the Sunway brand’s positive perception among the public.

Driving sustainability

An independent research centre, the Sustainable Employer Research Centre uses the SEI to rank the Top 100 Most Sustainable employers, with the goal of empowering the stakeholders and talent on identifying companies that comply with ESG considerations, in order to bring about the creation of a circular economy.

Sunway has paved the way towards sustainability by leading continent-wide sustainability initiatives through their US$20mil (more than RM84mil) commitment to establish the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s (SDSN) Asia headquarters at Sunway University. It is one of three such overarching centres, along with New York City and Paris.

Another milestone was the establishment of the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development, which is named after Jeffrey D. Sachs, one of the world's leading experts in sustainable development. Sachs, the global director of the UN-SDSN and special advisor to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon – said, “Importantly, this partnership focuses on the development challenges in Southeast Asia and the best way to address them: by engaging young minds and directing their energies towards the complex challenges and opportunities of the SDGs.”

Moreover, the group also recently established the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health at Sunway University, which aspires to become the first planetary health-oriented university in the world.

Top choice of graduates

But that’s not all – Sunway bagged yet another slew of award wins at TalentBank’s GCA 2021/2022, rising up as the only company to clinch eight awards out of 49 categories from among more than 90 international brands across a range of different sectors.

Vitally, the results, which were audited by GCA’s Board of Audit Committee, were 100% determined by the votes of university students nationwide.

Sunway Group chief human resources officer Foo Shiang Wyne said, “Winning the GCA is a validation of Sunway’s commitment to building a new generation of corporate leaders towards the sustainability of our nation’s economy.

“We remain committed to creating better opportunities for Malaysian graduates and co-creating a sustainable future for our country by nurturing talent and fostering innovation and tech-savviness, as we undergo a transformation into a sustainability-focused and digitally-driven conglomerate.”

The recognition comes on top of Sunway’s recent ranking as the only local and private conglomerate to garner a spot among the top 10 most attractive employers for 2021, as rated by leading global human resources solutions agency Randstad Malaysia.

It topped the list out of 75 commercial companies in Randstad’s 2021 employer brand research, which unveiled the perceptions of job seekers and workers on employer brands, by understanding value proposition factors and drivers for employees.

As the success of an organisation largely depends on its people, implementing measures towards a sustainable workplace creates a healthy and wholesome working environment where people can thrive and reach their full potential.
