Healthy eating and lifestyle leads to healthy heart

To lead a healthy lifestyle, nutrition is the key to nourishing the body.

IN the frenzy created by the global pandemic, many of us have been caught up in issues surrounding the Covid-19 virus.

However, do you realise that heart disease is the No.1 killer in Malaysia?

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, heart disease remains the top cause of death in the country, with 16,325 victims making up 15% of medically certified deaths in 2019.

The observance of World Heart Day on Sept 29 highlights the importance of taking care of heart health, more so in these times.

As a leading wellness and nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition takes the issue of heart health seriously and advocates a healthy lifestyle coupled with a healthy diet to ensure your heart stays in prime condition.

‘Today, even young people, some as young as in their 20s, are getting heart attacks. In conjunction with World Heart Day, we want to raise awareness on protecting the health of your heart,’ says Herbalife Nutrition Malaysia and Singapore senior director/general manager Steven Chin.

According to Herbalife Nutrition Malaysia and Singapore senior director/general manager Steven Chin, heart disease is no longer a disease of the aged.

Unhealthy lifestyle and diet rank among major contributors of heart disease. Non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension as well as conditions such as obesity, are also among the main contributors.

“When it comes to the heart, it is important to look at prevention. As a leader in health and nutrition, we have formed collaborations and initiatives to develop educational content on nutrition, health and wellness.

“We run an annual Asia Pacific survey on lifestyle and nutrition, the results of which are used to develop our educational programmes and materials,” says Chin.

Research pharmacologist Dr Lou Ignarro, who is noted for his discovery of nitric oxide and its role in heart health, shares: “As I found in my research, nitric oxide is one of the most important molecules in the cardiovascular system. Increased nitric oxide results in increased blood flow to the organs, which supports healthy blood pressure and a healthy cardiovascular system.

“But for all this to happen, the ‘production house’ of nitric oxide – the endothelium – needs to be supported. Exercising, eating a healthy diet, lowering stress, and losing weight – all contribute to endothelial health,” says Dr Ignarro, recipient of the Nobel Laureate in medicine for his work and research on nitric oxide and a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board.

He says that supplementing our diet with targeted nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, CoQ10, krill, garlic and green tea helps keep our endothelium healthy by providing the nutrients it needs to function at its best.

According to him, to lead a healthy lifestyle, nutrition is the key to nourishing the body.

“Think about what you’re eating and what you are putting in your body. If you are not getting enough nutrition from your diet alone, you need to take supplements to make up the deficit.

“At Herbalife Nutrition, we recommend the Global Nutrition Philosophy (GNP) – a plant-rich diet to help support your body. GNP guides us on what and how much we should be consuming along with rest, exercise and hydration.”
