The Embassy of Italy in Kuala Lumpur invites you to join them in a webinar on design and sustainability

IN conjunction with the fifth annual Italian Design Day 2021, the Embassy of Italy in Kuala Lumpur, along with the Malaysia Italy Design Institute (MIDI) of University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), with the support of the Italian Trade Agency, will hold the webinar on July 8, 2021.

It will be live streamed at 3.30pm on the Italian embassy’s Facebook page.

Established in 2017 as a yearly event to promote Italian design abroad, this year's Italian Design Day theme is Project and Matter: New Challenges for the Sustainable Restart of the Made in Italy.

In line with the theme, the webinar will focus on the connection between design and sustainability to minimise waste, consume non-renewable resources and create healthier, more productive environments.

The online session will cover various topics including key strategies and initiatives to be implemented in the sector of design as this is seen as one of the drivers for economic recovery in the current challenging times.

The talk will be led by the current ambassador of design from Milan's Polytechnic University, Prof Silvia D'Ambrosio, together with former ambassador of design from the same university, Prof Luca Fois.

Guest speakers include:

  • Ar Idr Dr Tan Loke Mun – principal of DrTanLM Architect, director of ArchiCentre Sdn Bhd and DTLM Design Group founder and director

  • Idr Joe WH Chan – MIID honorary treasurer and principal of DesignTone Interior Practice

  • Prof Ts Dr Khairul Aidil Azlin Abd Rahman of the Malaysian Association of Industrial Designers (Pereka).

According to Italian ambassador to Malaysia Cristiano Maggipinto: “The theme of the Italian Design Day 2021 is of particular importance in consideration of the fact that this is a crucial year for the defence of the environment, the fight against climate change and the promotion of authentically sustainable development – all themes that will be at the centre of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) which will be co-chaired by the United Kingdom and Italy.”

“Italy will host the pre-COP and the Youth4Climate meetings which will take place in Milan from Sept 28 to Oct 2, and will play an essential role in preparing the COP26 meeting the following November in Glasgow.”

To further enrich the celebrations connected to the Italian Design Day, the screening from July 9-15, 2021 of the 90-minute recently-produced Italian animated movie Trash (in English) will be available for free to the first 500 people who register here.

The movie tells the story of Slim, a damaged cardboard box that lives in a market with its friends. Slim tries to survive cleaning machines and soon loses hope, and even stops believing that a second chance can be found in a mythical “magic pyramid”.

In addition to the movie screening, there will also be Trash! – a virtual exhibition dedicated to the themes of sustainability, environment protection, recycling and reusing of waste materials.

Visitors can walk through various virtual rooms and pore over the over 200 drawings, storyboards and a selection of video materials from the movie after sending an email to kualalumpur.rsvp@esteri.it to request a password, and logging in to www.trashexhibition.it.
