PETALING JAYA: National swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean (pic) will be using the Glasgow Commonwealth Games from July 23-Aug 2 to prepare for the Asian Games but he still intends to set some new records.
The SEA Games gold medallist wants to help the Malaysian team better the men’s 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relay national records of 3:17.23s and 7:03.62s respectively, set at the World Championships in Hungary in 2024.
“Although the Commonwealth Games is an important meet, I’m more focused on the Asian Games. But I’m also hoping to better some records in Glasgow,” said the 23-year-old, following a training session at the National Aquatic Center in Bukit Jalil on Monday.
Apart from the relays, Hoe Yean will also be competing in the 800m and 1,500m freestyle events.
He said that the team for Glasgow, who also comprise Lim Yin Chuen, Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal and Jayden Tan, have a deliberate strategy for the swimmers to compete in categories which are not their pet events.
‘’This is part of the plan to help us better prepare for the Asian Games (Aug 19-Sept 4), and we hope to do well outside of our pet events.’’
Hoe Yean also highlighted the impact that new coach Michael Kinross has had on his training regimen.
“The training under his guidance has been challenging, as he has been pushing me to my limit. But I think this has helped me unlock a new level,” added Hoe Yean.
