Whitney wows again

PETALING JAYA: Rising squash player Whitney Isabelle Wilson lived up to her top billing by winning the girls’ Under-19 title at the Squash Racquets Association of Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Junior Championship yesterday.

The 18-year-old secured her second title of the year after defeating compatriot Jinoreeka Ning 12-10, 6-11, 11-5, 11-4 at the Jalan Duta Squash Courts.

Whitney, who won the National Junior Under-19 title in January, said the victory yesterday was sweeter after scoring 6As in her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.

“It’s been a good week for me. It’s extra special because it’s also my second title of the year,” said Whitney.

“This will also be my last year competing in the juniors.”

Whitney will be hoping to cap off her junior career with a strong showing at the Asian Junior Championships in Panzhihua, China, from May 20-24.

She will have another big task after that as she heads to Canada for the World Junior Championships from July 20-31.

“I’m ready to compete with the seniors. I see myself as the underdog so I’m excited because there’s no pressure on me,” she said.

Meanwhile, Altamis Aqhar Sallam Sufian defended his boys Under-19 title after defeating Aqil Mirza Naim Khairil Fariz 11-6, 8-11, 11-3, 12-10. It was revenge for Altamis who finished second to Aqil at the National Junior Championships in January.
