Sivasangari reaches quarter-finals but Eain Yow exits Tournament of Champions


PETALING JAYA: National squash player S. Sivasangari booked her spot in the Tournament of Champions quarter-finals after winning a tough second-round battle against the United States’ Amanda Sobhy on Monday (Jan 26).

World No. 6 Sivasangari, who celebrated her 27th birthday on Saturday, clawed her way back from two games down to defeat the world No. 11 American 6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-4 in 55 minutes at the Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

The victory marks Sivasangari's third consecutive win over Sobhy, further improving her head-to-head record to 5-2.

The fifth-seeded Malaysian will now face fourth seed Olivia Weaver of the United States in the quarter-finals.

Weaver advanced after defeating Egypt's Salma Hany in her second-round match.

In the men's category, world No. 16 Ng Eain Yow bowed out of the tournament after a valiant effort against world No. 10 Mohamed El Shorbagy of England. Eain Yow took the fight to the eighth seed in an 81-minute marathon but eventually lost 11-4, 15-13, 9-11, 6-11, 7-11.
