PETALING JAYA: Rising squash player J. Yasshmita has gotten a massive boost in confidence after taking her first win of the year at the Yokohama Open yesterday.
Top seed Yasshmita lived up to expectations as she defeated Iran’s Fereshteh Eghtedari 11-2, 11-6, 11-8 to win the 6K PSA Challenger event.
World No. 85 Yasshmita is pumping herself up ahead of the 2025 World Championship Qualifiers (WCQ) Asia Region, which takes place from April 17-20 at the University Malaya Wall Squash Complex.
“I’m really happy with this win because it’s been a tough past couple of weeks.
“And now winning this tournament means a lot because it’s a good boost for me before the qualifiers, which start in a couple of days,” said the 20-year-old.
Yasshmita admitted that entering the tournament in Japan as the top seed came with its own pressure, but she kept her composure throughout the competition.
“There was definitely pressure coming here as the top seed, all the players here are good.
“But my main goal was to play my game well and take it one step at a time, and I’m glad I achieved that,” said the Bristol-based player.
Yasshmita bounced back in Japan after suffering a first-round exit at the Manchester Open earlier this month at the hands of compatriot Aifa Azman.
At the WCQ, Yasshmita will be starting her campaign by taking on fellow Malaysian Goh Zhi Xuan in the opening round.
