Malaysian players hoping to shine at British Open

PETALING JAYA: Four national squash players will be hoping to end their season on a high note at the prestigious British Open in Manchester from May 20-26.

For women’s squash legend Datuk Nicol David (pic), it will also be her final tournament before she calls time on her glittering career which has seen her win a record breaking eight world titles.

The five-time British Open winner and world No. 18 should be able to overcome Hong Kong’s Ho Tze Lok before facing world No. 3 Nour El Tayeb.

Low Wee Wern, who has a rather good season since returning from a serious knee injury in July last year, will have to overcome England’s Fiona Moverley in the first round.

If she passes this stage, the former world No. 5 will set up a clash with current world No. 5 Joelle King of New Zealand in the second round.

In the men’s draw, rising star Ng Eain Yow who reached the semi-finals of the Asian Individual Cham­pionships earlier this month, will want to build on it at the British Open.

On paper, the 21-year-old who is world No. 36, is at a disadvantage against England’s world No. 22 Tom Richards but having stunned world No. 23 Max Lee of Hong Kong in the quarter-finals of the Asian Individual Championships, there is no counting Eain Yow out.

The second round will be a mammoth task for Eain Yow who plays Germany’s world No. 5 Simon Rosner.

Ivan Yuen takes on Scotland’s Greg Lobban in the first round and should he successfully win that match he will go on to play Egypt’s Zahed Salem.
