PETALING JAYA: Powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin successfully retained his gold medal in the men's below 72kg category at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games on Tuesday (Oct 20).
Bonnie successfully cleared 216kg and 225kg on his first two attempts, and the latter was enough to secure the gold for Malaysia at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Centre.
The 27-year-old attempted 231kg on his final attempt to break his 230kg Games record from the last Asiad in Hangzhou three years ago but was unsuccessful.
China's Zhang Pingkang finished a distant second on 212kg while Iran's Mohsen Bakhtiar (208kg) was third.
It was Malaysia's second gold in Japan following track cyclist Zuhairie Ahmad Tarmizi's victory in the men's C4-C5 1km time trial event on Monday (Oct 19).
