PETALING JAYA: Karate exponent K. Thevendran delivered the first medal for Malaysia contingent at the Asian Games after picking up the bronze in the men's kumite below 55kg category at the Toyohashi Gymnasium in Aichi on Sunday (Sept 20).
The 22-year-old Thevendran, the reigning SEA Games gold medallist in the same weight category, scored a thumping 9-1 win over Rakesh Manandhar of Nepal in the bronze-medal match.
Thevendran, who hails from Kuala Lumpur, had earlier lost 0-3 in the quarter-finals to Khalimov Khumoyunmirzo of Uzbekistan but had another chance to progress through the repechage rounds.
