PETALING JAYA: Malaysia could yet finish the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with more than the targeted five gold medals after reaching the mark with three days of competition still to go.
Chef de mission Datuk Awaluddin Aziz was delighted that the contingent had achieved the target.
Several medal events are still up for grabs, including track cycling, which started today at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Awaluddin believes Malaysia have every chance of winning more medals and climbing higher in the overall standings.
“I believe we can add more medals, especially in the remaining events such as weightlifting, lawn bowls, track cycling and judo,” he said.
“Everyone has the potential to reach the podium and, of course, if they can win gold, even better.”
Awaluddin also believes reaching the gold medal target ahead of schedule has given the remaining athletes an extra boost.
“I don’t think so (that the pressure has eased). Their fighting spirit remains high and they are still determined to do their best,” he added.
Malaysia are currently sixth in the medal standings with five gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Four of the gold medals have come from the national weightlifting team through Aniq Kasdan (men’s 60kg), Aznil Bidin (men’s 65kg), Erry Hidayat (men’s 79kg) and Hafizuddin Roslin (men’s 88kg).
Paralympic star Abdul Latif Romly delivered the fifth gold after winning the men’s T20 long jump.
