PETALING JAYA: Asian Games-bound wushu athlete Tan Cheong Min showed what grit and determination are all about as she wrapped her Taolu World Cup campaign on a high in Haikou, China.

The 27-year-old fought her way with Pang Pui Yee and Lee Jia Rong to another gold medal in the women's duilian competition.

The trio scored 9.660 points to deliver Malaysia's third gold medal of the championship.

Italy also scored 9.660 points but settled for silver due to a lower difficulty set.

Hong Kong clinched bronze with 9.653 points.

It was the second gold for Cheong Min and Jia Rong in the championship.

Cheong Min retained her nangun (stick) title while Jia Rong bagged the first gold for Malaysia after winning the daoshu (sword) event earlier.

Cheong Min also bagged bronze in the women's nandao event, scoring 9.220 points behind Macao (9.446) and China (9.783).

Malaysia finished third overall with three gold, one silver and one bronze behind Hong Kong (5-2-2) and China (8-0-0).

Wushu Federation of Malaysia president Datuk Chong Kim Fatt paid tribute to the women athletes, especially Cheong Min for showing great resilience.

"Cheong Min arrived here with a slight leg injury and we have been taking her for acupuncture treatment every evening here,'' he said.

"Her very first event was nangun and she was very determined to give her best.

"After getting the gold, we told her to relax and not put too much strain on herself.

"I'm happy with the women exponents as they showed consistency on the world stage.

"The same women's duilian team also won gold at the World Championships in Brazil last year and I believe the exponents are on the right track to do well at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan."

The women exponents will remain in China to prepare for the Asian Games after this.
