Sabahan Jia Chi knocks out Thai world champ to win gold in muay thai

BANGKOK: Muay thai athlete Angie Yan Jia Chi was jumping for joy after kicking up a storm in the SEA Games in Bangkok on Wednesday (Dec 17).

The 21-year-old Jia Chi upstaged reigning world champion from Thailand Thongduang Thanawan to bag the gold medallist in wai kru (non sparring) discipline at the Lumpinee Stadium.

With the win, she becomes the first gold medal winner in the event.

The Sabah-born exponent scored 9.33 points to edge the Thai fighter, who managed 9.20 points.
