PETALING JAYA: Puteri Sharifah Ariel Budriah Jamalullail made equestrian history after clinching gold for Malaysia in the girls' showjumping event at the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.
The 15-year-old, astride Panamera Z, became Malaysia's first gold medallist in equestrian at the Asian Youth Games after prevailing in a tight contest.
Sharifah was the fastest finisher among the 14 who had to go to the final jump-off, clearing all the barriers without any penalty in 29.85s.
Sharifah was ranked first after the preliminary round.
Mohd Humam Harith of Iraq was the second fastest for silver in 30.52s.
Mohd Saleh Mufrrej Ali Alkarbi of the United Arab Emirates claimed bronze after finishing in 31.10s.
It is the first gold for the Malaysian contingent after five days of Games competition.
Malaysia also claimed their second silver medal on Monday through Nigel Gerfan in the boys' pole vault event.
The 15-year-old cleared 4.50m to take silver ahead of China's Jiang Yunfan, who cleared 4.40m.
Thai athlete Tanakorm Daengmanee got the gold with a height of 5.00m.
Muay exponent Aureylle Xzandra Bobby bagged Malaysia's first silver in the girls' Wai Kru event (14-15).
Malaysia also have picked up nine bronze medals so far.
Muay turned out to be the biggest medal contributor so far with five more bronzes from their exponents - Jaethan Jonathan Quan (boys' Wai Kru 14-15), Ariesya Dania Abdul Latip (girls' Wai Kru 16-17), Jaethan-Bethany Yun Yunn (mixed Wai Kru), Mohd Haikal Faiz (boys' 45kg) and Mia Nur Al Amani Nashary (girls' 48kg).
Teqball contributed two bronze medals through Mohd Danish Amirul-Abdullah Rahmat (boys' doubles) and Danish-Putri Zarra Arissa (mixed doubles) while taekwondo's Tiffany Sim earned another bronze in girls' freestyle poomsae individual.
Pencak silat exponent Mohd Raqib Darwisy was the first medal winner when he took bronze in the Putera 59-63kg category.
Malaysia sent 116 young athletes (51 boys and 65 girls) to participate in 17 out of 26 sports - athletics, aquatics, badminton, boxing, cycling, equestrian, e-sports, golf, judo, muay, pencak silat, table tennis, taekwondo, teqball, triathlon, volleyball and weightlifting.
