PETALING JAYA: Malaysian waterski star Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah has set higher goals after making a big splash at the National Collegiate Water Ski Association (NCWSA) Nationals.
The 20-year-old Aaliyah, who is currently pursuing her tertiary education at the Florida Southern College (FSC), won a silver in the women’s overall and a bronze in the tricks discipline in her maiden appearance in the national collegiate tournament.
She finished 12th in the slalom with a score of 4.50/55/12 on Thursday but she did not let the setback deter her from doing well in the remaining two events.
She made a strong comeback by jumping to a height of 40.4m, earning her the fourth position in the jump division at the Tri-Lakes in Zachary, Lusiana on Friday and in the tricks, she amassed an impressive 4,400 points to clinch the bronze on Saturday.
That fine performance saw her finishing second in the overall category.
Aaliyah was grateful for the opportunity to represent her college in the NCWSA Nationals, which is the highlight of all universities and colleges sports programmes in United States.
“A total of 50 universities competed and 24 made it to Nationals, that’s how competitive it is at this level,” said Aaliyah.
“My performances in my maiden stint as a freshman has definitely increased my profile in my college, as more students are seeking sponsorships in colleges in USA.
“I’m also very happy to have contributed important points for my college. We have moved from 5th to 4th position this year.
“I can’t wait to be a champion in one or two disciplines next season and finish top three with my team next year.
She thanked her college waterski team chief coach Curtis Rabe.
“I’m grateful for this awesome opportunity to study in the field of psychology in FSC as well as represent the college in waterski!
“Not forgetting too my gratitude to Yayasan Sime Darby for believing in me,” added Aaliyah.
