Malaysian athletes leave their mark in Para Asean Games

KUALA LUMPUR: It was another glorious day for Malaysia in athletics at the Para Asean Games in Singapore when sprinter Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Puzi set the track ablaze with two new records.

The 28-year-old Ridzuan clocked 12.01 in the 100m T36 (cerebral palsy) event to slice 0.45 of a second off the old Asean Games mark for the gold medal.

The old mark of 12.46 was set by the late Mohd Azlan Mat Lazim of Malaysia in Myanmar in 2013.

Ridzuan’s timing also bettered the Para Asian Games record of 12.38 set by Azlan in Incheon, South Korea, in 2014.

It was Ridzuan’s second gold at the Games. He also won the 200m T36 on Friday.

Malaysian woman sprinter – 16-year-old Felicia Mikat – collected her third gold at the Games when she won the 200m T13 in 30.63.

She had won the 100m T13 on Friday and the 400m T13 on Saturday. 

“We have young and experienced athletes in our team this time. It’s great to see them breaking barriers here. We hope to do better than last year,” said National Sports Council (NSC) paralympic director Mohd Safrushahar Yusoff.

Malaysia’s medal haul from the Games in Myanmar was 50 golds, 49 silvers and 41 bronzes.
