Weiron shows class in Abu Dhabi

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian driver Weiron Tan was right on the pace to clinch his first single seater race win in the Formula Gulf 1000 series at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Weiron, making a return to single-seater racing after a five-month break, earned an impressive victory in race two held under flood lights.

Weiron was unable to show his pace in qualifying due to a misfiring engine, which had hampered his weekend since the first practice and denying him important track time in the car.

His problems continued into the first race, forcing him into the pits with a persistent misfire that eventually put an early end to his endeavours.

However, with his car fixed, he finally got the opportunity to demonstrate his skills in race two.

Starting from the back of the grid, he weaved his way through the pack to take the lead early on in the race. He maintained the position throughout, setting some impressive lap times on his way to the top step of the rostrum.

Weiron will complete the remainder of the Formula Gulf 1000 championship. The next two races will take place in Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina on March 15 with the season rounding off on March 29 at the Dubai Autodrome.

“It felt really good to be back in the car again after such a long time since I last raced due to a delay in my visa application for my university studies in the UK.

“Now I can fully focus on racing once again and I couldn’t have wished for a better return to action than getting my first race win in formula cars. It was an amazing feeling and I can’t wait to get on the top step of the podium again. I will definitely be aiming for wins in the Abu Dhabi and Dubai that will wrap up the Formula Gulf 1000 series.’’
