Friends and colleagues mourn loss of long-time hockey journalist Jugjet

PETALING JAYA: Media friends and the Malaysian hockey fraternity mourns the loss of a reputable journalist Jugjet Singh Randhawa, who passed away at Beacon Hospital, Petaling Jaya about 3pm on Thursday (March 14).

The 55-year-old Jugjet, who had been with the New Straits Times sports team for three decades and mainly covered hockey, succumbed to colon cancer.

He leaves behind wife Jasbir Kaur Aujla and sons Arvin, Sanjit, Ranjit and Baljit.

The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) expressed their condolences in a statement.

"The president of MHC and all the members would like to express our condolences to the family of late Jugjet Singh Randhawa, who passed away just now."

"Late Jugjet was a sports journalist who did special coverage of hockey since last three decades and started with NST since 1994.

"The services of late Jugjet and his family will always be remembered and appreciated by MHC."

NST sports editor Ajitpal Singh said: "He was one of my first mentors when I entered the field of sports journalism. He was a bold and brave journalist with a kind heart. He wrote beautiful columns and his passion for hockey made him one of the best and respected reporters from the NST in the sport."

"Jugjet's absence will be deeply felt. There can only be one Jugjet Singh, my mentor, my teacher, and my friend."

Double hockey Olympian Datuk R. Yogeswaran said: 'I was glad that I was able to spend some time with Jugjet and his family a short while before he passed on. This will be a treasured memory for me".

"Jugjet will be remembered by the hockey fraternity for his vast contribution and his passion for the sport. May his soul rest in peace."
