Rhythmic team keep it modest for SEA Games

PETALING JAYA: The national rhythmic gymnastics squad are setting a modest target at the Thailand SEA Games next month as they anticipate intense competition from neighboring countries.

Head coach Petrina Low said they were hoping to win two out of the four gold medals up for grabs at the Games from Dec 9-20.

“The target is two, anything else is a bonus,” said Petrina.

“I always tell everyone this, it’s better to be humble and if we get more, it’s a bonus.

“I only targeted one at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but Ng Joe Ee brought back two golds.”

Team manager Afrita Nasril said the competition would be particularly tough from the Philippines and Singapore, who both have athletes training and based overseas.

“The Philippines has an athlete based in Italy, while the Singapore gymnast is in the United States.”

Afrita said among the shortlisted names that were set to compete in Thailand are Lai Yun Jo, Mavia Wong, and Joe Ee, but the upcoming Petrina Cup from Nov 18-23 will be used to finalise the routines and names.

“We will look at the names again depending on the individual gymnast’s ability and readiness, as well as our strategy.”

Before that, the national athletes will compete in China in an invitational tournament.

“They will be up against top guns there. So we aren’t expecting anything,” said Petrina.

“Most importantly, they do their best there.

“It’s very good exposure for the girls as it will be the final proper test for them.”
