PETALING JAYA: Thank you, girls.

The rhythmic gymnasts arrived in Birmingham a week ago - with a one-gold medal target on their shoulders and without their coaches but yesterday, they went one step better by contributing two golds through debutant Ng Joe Ee.

The 17-year-old Joe Ee won the ball and ribbon events while Izzah Amzan (pic) took the bronze in the clubs.

Joe Ee, Izzah and Koi Sie Yan had narrowly missed out on a medal when they finished fourth in the team event while Izzah also missed an opportunity to add another after taking the fourth spot in the individual all-around.

“The coaches (Yulia Ivanova and Lidia Legotina) and I are very happy the girls delivered. We knew it wasn’t easy after the disappointments in the team and individual all-around but they really showed their abilities today, we are proud of them,” said Petrina Low, who is the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) technical delegate for rhythmic gymnastics.

“They stepped up in their performance and did not let the country down.

“I know Sie Yan will return without any medal but she doesn’t have to worry, she will have many other opportunities to get it right. We are proud of each one of them,” she added.
