Malaysian pro golfer Winnie Ng
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian golfer Winnie Ng brought some early Merdeka joy to the nation after achieving a career breakthrough win in Thailand.
The 24-year-old rookie pro savoured a rare win by a Malaysian on Thai soil after winning the Singha Life Color Tour event in Nakhon Nayok.
Winnie braved the rain to card six birdies for a five-under 67 at the Watermill Golf Club and Resort.
She finished a stroke clear of Thai rookie Anita Saechueng.
It was a memorable moment for Winnie as she had her father Kenny Ng close beside her to share her joy.
Kenny caddied for Winnie in the competition.
The Singha Life Color Tour is a series of one-day warm up tournaments staged before the Thailand LPGA Tour events.
A total of 124 players took part in the Singha Life Color Tour and the win will give the two-time Malaysian Amateur Open winner a much needed confidence boost as she seeks to make a name for herself in Malaysian golf.
"It all happened so fast and I still can't believe I just captured my first win as a professional.
"It's been a journey and I'm so grateful that it happened here in Thailand, surrounded by so many friends.
"A very special thank you to my dad for being on the bag today. Your patience and support have always been the backbone of my journey.
"To my family, sponsors and everyone who has stood by me through the highs and lows, thank you for your endless belief in me. This win is as much yours as it is mine," Winnie posted on her Instagram.
Winnie had taken part in the Jack Fish Guangdong Women's Open in China last week where she emerged as the best Malaysian finisher.
Winnie placed 30th with a three-day total of six-over 222 (75-74-73).
