PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s rising golf talent Mirabel Ting will be making her way to the prestigious NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Championship Finals next week, thanks to another great show.
Ranked second in the world amateur standing, Mirabel continued with her hot form this season when she played her part to the tee for the Florida State University en route to winning the team title in the NCAA Lexington Regional championship at the Keane Trace Golf Club on Wednesday.
The golf team, also comprising world No. 1 Lottie Woad, defeated Georgia Southern and Kansas State by five strokes.
Mirabel hit three birdies on the final day to finish in a tie for second place with her British teammate Woad in the individual standings with a 10-under 206.
Mirabel closed the tournament with a two-under 70 as Carla Bernat of Kansas State carded a six-under 66 in the final round to emerge as the winner on 12-under.
Florida State University will head to the NCAA Finals on a hot streak, having won the team championships in six of their seven events this spring.
The NCAA Finals will take place in Carlsbad, California from May 16-21.
Georgia Southern, Kansas State, Southern California and Vanderbilt join Florida State University as the top five finishing teams from the Lexington Regional Championship.
The Sarawak-born Mirabel has been on a hot, searing form this season having won five collegiate tournaments in her last six starts.
Mirabel has now finished under par in each of her eight collegiate events this year and head coach Amy Bond is optimistic would be able to make history next week.
“All of the girls played really good golf this week, and I’m so proud of all of them,” said Bond.
“Advancing from the regional championship is one of the goals we set for ourselves when the season began. The girls took a lot of stress out of the week because they all played well.
“To make it to the national championship is what we’ve worked all spring. Now we have the opportunity to test ourselves against the best teams in the nation as one of the last 30 teams standing,” added Bond on the school’s official golf page.
