Rickie Fowler is a classic example of where you should be to power it down the fairway. – AFP

THERE is not a player on Tour who does not want to hit the ball further and straighter than he/she does. Of course, this applies to club golfers too.

So, to really belt it the right way, we share a few pointers that can help you realise more distance with the big stick.

Remember, with short drives you are always left with long approaches, making it difficult to score well.

Despite one’s physical attributes or standard of play, following a few key principles could help you achieve your maximum distance.

Finding a few extra yards off the tee-box will no doubt give you the chance to be more aggressive with the green in range and benefit your scores.

Carry it long

In order to hit the ball a long way you have to carry it long. And to do that tee the ball up higher and get your weight slightly more on your right side at address (for right-handers).

Upper body coil

If you coil your upper body you keep loft on the driver – that creates distance. Turn fully to get your lead shoulder directly under your chin.

Keep legs stable

In the backswing and transition always keep your legs stable and knees flexed. A firm base from this will spring you into impact.
