THE LPGA Shanghai event has been called off due to the pandemic. It did not take place last year, also because Covid-19.

The women’s Tour cited travel restrictions as the reason behind the cancellation of the US$2.1mil tournament, scheduled to take place at Qizhong Garden Golf Club from Oct 14 to 17.

Danielle Kang clinched the inaugural Shanghai tournament in 2018 and then successfully defended her crown the following year.

This latest development comes in the wake of the LPGA tournament in Taipei, Taiwan, scheduled from Oct 28 to 31, also being cancelled for a second straight season, due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Interest has shifted to the men’s US PGA Tour, given that their WGC-HSBC Champions tournament is scheduled for Shanghai’s Sheshan International Golf Club from Oct 28 to 31.

This event has Rory McIlroy as the defending champion from 2019. It was called off last year because of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour’s season finale will take at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia where the Tour Championship starts on Thursday.

Going into the BMW Championship, which is set to come to an end today at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, Northern Trust winner Tony Finau led the FedExCup standings with a 585-point cushion over US Open champion and world number one Jon Rahm.

Dustin Johnson won the FedExCup trophy last year.

In women’s Solheim Cup this week, where the United States are favourites to retain the silverware at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, Europe have named three rookies.

They are Nanna Madsen of Denmark, who finished fifth at the Women’s British Open, Ireland’s Leona Maguire and Finland’s Matilda Castren.

World number one Nelly Korda will spearhead the Team USA, who also have in the side her sister Jessica, Danielle Kang, Ally Ewing, Austin Ernst, Lexi Thompson, Megan Khang, Lizette Salas and Jennifer Kupcho.
