Asian Cup push for Safuwan to go extra mile with Selangor

PETALING JAYA: Veteran centreback Safuwan Baharudin is ready to go the extra mile to help Selangor achieve success this season.

The 35-year-old Singaporean’s motivation goes beyond the Super League, as he intends to earn a spot in the Lion City squad for next year’s Asian Cup.

‘‘It will be a win-win situation for me if I can help Selangor do well this season as I’m determined to play for my country in the Asian Cup,’’ said Safuwan.

His priorities with the Red Giants are to help them qualify for continental competition and also reach the FA Cup final.

Selangor must finish second in the Super League to be eligible for Asian competition next season.

In the FA Cup, they hold a 2-1 first-leg lead in the semi-final against Kuching City, with the second leg in Sarawak on Nov 8.

Safuwan is one of several Singaporeans to have reached a century of caps, having won 133 since making his international debut in 2010.

He was part of the team that qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time in 42 years and is regarded as one of the pillars alongside captain Hariss Harun and the Fandi brothers, Ikhsan, Irfan and Ilhan.

The Asian Cup will be held from Jan 7-Feb 5 in Saudi Arabia.

Singapore are in Group D with Australia, Iraq and Tajikistan.
