PETALING JAYA: The door is open for Azri Ghani to stake his claim as Malaysia’s first-choice goalkeeper in the absence of regulars Ahmad Syihan Hazmi and Haziq Nadzli at the AFF Hyundai Cup.
But Azri, fondly known as Ayie, is not taking anything for granted as he is aware that he still has to fend off two towering rivals Rahadiazli Rahalim and Haziq Aiman Esa for the gloves.
While the 27-year-old boasts the most experience of the trio, interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe could instead opt for height, with Rahadiazli (1.91m) and Haziq (1.92m) both dwarfing Azri’s 1.78m frame.
What Azri lacks in stature, however, he makes up for with sharp shot-stopping and strong command of his box, in addition to a comfortable, ball-playing style when starting attacks from the back.
Malaysia begin their AFF Hyundai Cup Group B campaign against Myanmar at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon today.
Azri said preparations for the tournament have been short but well organised, and he is confident every player in the squad is ready to do their job.
“It’s between Rahadi, Haziq and myself now. We’re all competing well, and there’s no confirmed No. 1 yet. Whoever is given the chance, I believe he can do well for the team,” he said.
“I hope I can give my best and help the national team win our first game.”
On the Myanmar match, Azri said the team have done their homework on the hosts’ starting line-up and are confident of putting up a fight.
“We know their strengths. We can compete with them, and hopefully luck is on our side,” he said.
“I hope for a win. I hope the players can give their best and their fullest commitment. We will play as one strong team – we want to get our first points on the board.”
Azri also gave assurance over his fitness, revealing he began training early with his club Negri Sembilan.
“My fitness is okay now. I’m able to follow the national team training fully,” he said.
The custodian also expressed confidence in naturalised forward Paulo Josue leading the line, urging his teammates to support the experienced striker.
And he also believes he can be the leader of the side.
“Paulo is experienced. I hope the team can help him with assists. It’s not a problem for me – I hope he can give his best too,” said Azri.
On the leadership in camp, Azri credited Josue for keeping the squad united and motivated heading into the tournament opener.
