PETALING JAYA: Portuguese winger Miguel Oliveira intends to repay Brunei for extending his contract although the team did not end last season the way they had hoped to.
The versatile 31-year-old, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder, striker or wingback, can offer coach Jamie McAllister more options as the Wasps target to better their 10th place finish.
“I want to start the new season with a bigger mission - to help the team secure more points and finish in a higher position.
‘‘I also want to add to my goal tally,’’ said Oliveira.
He also hopes there will be no repeat of last season’s setback, when a groin injury sidelined him for nearly four months.
“The first half of last season was difficult and frustrating because of the injury.
‘‘I tried to push through it, training and playing in pain, and it wasn’t easy,” he said.
“What kept me going was my teammates, they pushed me to give my best whenever I was out there with them.”
Oliveira finished last season with four goals and four assists from 26 appearances.
He won’t be short of competition for a place on the flanks as Guatemalan winger Oscar Santos, local talent Hakeme Yazid Said and rising Malaysian prospect Farris Izdiham Awang Kechik are all in the mix.
Brunei have also bolstered their defence, confirming the signings of goalkeeper Samuel Somerville, centreback Nicholas Swirad and Scottish defender Clark Robertson.
