PETALING JAYA: Buriram United coach Mark Jackson hailed his players’ determination and character after the Thai champions battled fatigue to secure a crucial 1-0 victory over Selangor in the first leg of the Asean Club Championship Shopee Cup final on Wednesday.
The defending champions produced a disciplined display at the Petaling Jaya Stadium to take a slender advantage into the return leg at the Chang Arena in Buriram on May 27.
Thailand winger Suphanat Muenta emerged as the match-winner when he headed home in the 25th minute from a pinpoint cross delivered by veteran midfielder Theerathon Bunmathan.
Despite the win, Jackson admitted his side had been stretched physically following a demanding run of fixtures in recent weeks.
They endured a series of intense matches, including 120 minutes against Johor Darul Ta’zim in the second-leg semi-final on May 13 and the Thai FA Cup against Ayutthaya United on May 17.
“We are pleased with the victory, especially coming away from home to get the result,” said Jackson.
“We knew it would be a tough game because Selangor are a very good team, and on top of that we have had a packed schedule recently.
“The players really dug deep, especially in the second half.
“They emptied the tank and I am so proud of the way they finished the game.
“But there is still one more match to play and we have to stay focused and be ready for that challenge.”
Added the Englishman: “We finally have a week to recover, which we have not had for a long time, so that is very welcome for us.
“We will make sure the players are mentally and physically ready because we expect another tough challenge.”
Jackson also welcomed the return of Brazilian striker Guilherme Bissoli for the second leg and praised the impact of Suphanat after his comeback from injury.
